ISLAMABAD: In a case involving "controversial" tweets that targeted institutions, a local court in Islamabad handed over Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Azam Swati to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on physical remand for two days on Sunday.
Waqas Ahmed Raja, the duty judge for the Judicial Magistrate, heard Swati's case, which was arrested earlier today, and made the reserved decision regarding the FIA's request for physical remand.
On behalf of the previous ruling party, advocates Babar Awan and Faisal Chaudhry appeared before the court.
During the hearing, the investigation officer informed the court that the senator's arrest was prompted by controversial tweets and that a narrative against state institutions was being planned.
He informed the court that the PTI leader has been the subject of a first information report (FIR) regarding this matter.
The tweet has not been denied by him.The officer in charge of the investigation stated, "He has committed this offense for the second time."
Awan expressed that the tweets made don't meet the arrangements of the FIR, adding that the assertion taken by the police has no legitimate status.
The assertion made by Swati in [Section] 164 was not taken into account. The last time, he was brutally tortured. He still isn't over the torture,' he continued.
In addition, the PTI advocate informed the court that Swati still suffers from the effects of both physical and mental torture, stating that this violates the rule of law and "is a mockery and the murder of the law."
The lawyer added that the senator's life is in danger. He then instructed the court to rely on the FIA's assurance that they would be held accountable for anything that occurred to Swati while she was in their care.
The order sheet ought to include the names of the FIA personnel present,” Awan continued.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime Wing Islamabad team raided Senator Swati's farmhouse early Sunday morning after he was accused of tweeting about senior military officials. Swati was arrested for the second time.
The cybercrime wing filed a complaint against Swati on November 26, and the Express Tribune has a copy of the complaint. The complaint was filed in response to "controversial" tweets that Swati allegedly sent recently that were directed at government officials, including the chief of the army staff (COAS).
According to the report, the leader of the PTI initiated a "highly obnoxious campaign of intimidating tweets" against state institutions, such as the army chief, "with malafide intentions and ulterior motives."
The senator added that he was "not one to run away and was not going to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa [K-P]" and that he returned home as soon as he gave his speech at the party's rally in Rawalpindi a day earlier.
